The Paul Project Description

The Paul Project is a non-profit Christian ministry dedicated to presenting the writings and words of the Apostle Paul in a live presentation format. It is presented in English using the English Standard Version of the Bible. It is organized into 16 different themes that Paul wrote about or spoke about across 13 different books of the New Testament. It can be presented as a complete program, of approximately 2 hours in length, or focused on specific themes that are shorter in duration. Paul’s impact on Christianity and the church is hard to exaggerate. It is rare to hear a Sunday sermon preached that does not reference something written or spoken by the Apostle Paul. The intent is to open up the Scriptures to those who may not be familiar with the content and to motivate them to study and understand its meaning and ultimately to draw them to God.

The Apostle Paul

Paul was a Jew of the first century born under the Jewish name Saul in Asia minor, or present-day Turkey, but he was also a Roman citizen which afforded him certain rights that non-citizens did not have. As a young person he studied under the highly influential and respected Rabbi, Gamaliel, in Jerusalem. He was a member of the Jewish sect of the Pharisees who focused on reviving the Jewish religion by adhering strictly to the law of Moses and adding a number of their own laws to the original canon as a way of ensuring they were keeping the law. Paul had limited if any direct contact with Jesus during his earthly ministry and came of age after Jesus had ascended into heaven.

As a Pharisee, Saul violently opposed the early Christians who were referred to as the Way. As almost all early Christians were Jews, he took it upon himself to punish and in some cases to execute the followers of the Way and purge Judaism of them. On one such attempt at persecution Paul is struck blind and is spoken to directly by an incorporeal Jesus. He is converted to Christianity and charged with the mission to convert the Gentiles, or non-Jews.

Following his conversion, he later travels widely in the eastern Mediterranean area establishing churches throughout the places where he visits. Around this period, he also begins using his given Roman name of Paul, which is how he is referred to from this point forward in the Scriptures. At various times he would write letters to these churches to discuss issues of doctrine, church leadership, and provide updates on the faith. These letters, combined with personal letters he wrote to individuals, and words he is recorded as speaking in the book of Acts, have been combined into a live presentation format to give as complete and comprehensive an exposition as possible of Paul’s ministry.

Live Format

In the present age, most people throughout the developed world have access to technology. This access has enabled a broad spectrum of content to be created in video format. The modern consumer of content prefers to be presented content as opposed to have to go out and read it. The National Endowment for the Arts reports that reading among adults has declined over the past decade. The intent of The Paul Project is to address this trend by presenting Paul’s words and writings in a live format that can be consumed in person or via a recorded format. In this way the maximum number of people can be exposed to the Scriptures and the content of the New Testament.

Themes

As the Apostle Paul wrote about a variety of theological and pragmatic issues in a multitude of different letters and Epistles, reading one or two of these sources may not provide a complete picture of his message. As Christians believe the Scriptures are written by man but inspired by God, understanding and discerning their meaning becomes of first importance. To enhance the presentation of Paul’s writings and speeches, The Paul Project is organized around 16 major themes. Some of these themes are theological in nature and some are practical in nature, describing how a Disciple of Jesus should live. Each of these themes contain content from multiple of Paul’s actual writings and speeches attributed to him in the Book of Acts. The intent is to provide as broad and deep a perspective as possible of each theme.

A: The Paul Project is almost entirely a word for word presentation of what the Apostle Paul actually wrote or is attributed to have said in the Book of Acts. The word almost is used as a qualifier as there are certain verses that sound awkward unless the beginning of the verse is dropped or a word changed to make sense in a live presentation format. (e.g. Ephesians 3:4 the phrase “When you read this,” is changed to “When you hear this.”)
